Let’s go back in time to when Demi was 15 years old and filming Camp Rock, which was shot from September to October of 2007. While she was filming, she was dating Jonathan Fryer. They dated from February to November 2007, and nothing significant has been reported about their relationship. Since Demi was working for Disney, it was common for child stars to keep romantic relationships private so they could focus on their careers.

However, what I found odd is that Demi Lovato admitted she fell in love with Joe Jonas while she was still in a relationship. Even though Joe and Demi didn’t start seeing each other yet, this would still be considered emotional cheating—especially with all the flirtatious behavior happening behind the scenes. So it doesn’t surprise me that her relationship ended a month after filming.

Once that relationship ended, Demi Lovato began dating Cody Linley in the same month. I always find it odd when someone starts dating a new person that quickly, because it could mean they were already interested in the new person while still in their previous relationship. Or it could simply mean they didn’t give themselves enough time to reflect on why the relationship didn’t work out.

Anyway, Cody Linley went into full detail about how their first date went badly before it even started in an interview with Seventeen Magazine. I’m just going to include a small snippet from the article. You can check out the full story if you’d like, but to summarize: his car broke down. After he got it fixed, he picked Demi up and explained what had happened. However, the car broke down again on the way to the restaurant. Demi was understanding and even helped him with the car. They eventually made it to a steak restaurant for their date.

Two years after they broke up, it was reported that Cody dedicated “Just the Way You Are” to Demi when she checked into rehab. Cody never confirmed whether the song was actually for her, and I couldn’t find any information where he said it was true. Do you guys think he really dedicated it to her? If not, are fans just trying to get them back together? What do you think?

There isn’t much information out there about their relationship. It seemed like a sweet romance that eventually ended, and I do wonder why. I’d love to know, because Cody seemed sweet and mature, and Demi needed someone who would treat her like a queen. Obviously, we don’t know what happened behind closed doors, so it’s best not to jump to conclusions. What we do know publicly is that Demi was dealing with a lot of inner demons, and it can be difficult for anyone to be in a relationship with someone who has deep struggles. I remember Joe Jonas saying that it was hard being with Demi because she was working through her childhood trauma. Whatever the case may be, it’s important to remain respectful and understanding when someone is on a healing journey.
The relationship may have ended on good terms, because as of August 20, 2024, Cody gave Demi a shout-out on her birthday. I found this to be cute and wholesome.

Supposedly, their relationship ended in June 2008, and a few months later, Demi started dating Alex DeLeon. Although the relationship itself was short-lived, it is controversial because this was the first man she dated who was of legal age. She was 16 while he was 19, which could be one of the reasons the relationship was kept private—especially while maintaining her “innocent girl” reputation as a Disney star.

Despite being brief, the relationship was apparently impactful, as some fans believe that Demi Lovato’s song “Catch Me” references it. I’ve decided to look into the lyrics to see if this is true. Demi often includes specific wording in her songs that point to an ex, such as in “Without the Love” and “Really Don’t Care.”
You can listen to the song right here:
Surprisingly, the song didn’t give any clear indication that it was about Alex. However, fans believe that Alex responded to the song with the lyrics written below. I tried to look up the song, but it’s unavailable. If anyone can find it, please send it to me—thank you!

According to this YouTube video, the general public first heard about Demi and Alex when they posted a joint message on Buzznet for Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz. Ashlee and Pete were together in late 2006 and got married in 2008. The reason Alex and Demi posted this message is that their first baby was born in November 2008, which is around the time they were dating. Side note: Ashlee looks incredibly beautiful when she’s pregnant. Awww. ^-^

Anyway, let’s get back to their timeline. Some people believe that the song “Remember December” is about Alex, and I can see why — but it could also be about Cody since they dated around December as well. Who do you guys think the song is about?

Supposedly, the relationship ended because the long distance strained things. This aligns with what Demi said in her Simply Complicated documentary: she had to tour, promote, film, and work on her show Sonny with a Chance.

I know there is so much more that happened publicly with Demi and Alex, but I still need to talk about Demi’s next relationship. I’ll upload the rest on my TikTok and Instagram.
Trace and Demi supposedly dated from April to October 2009, and this relationship is also controversial because Demi was 16 while Trace was 20. One of the strangest things about this relationship is that you can’t find any photos of them hanging out or attending events together. I wonder why that is—Demi kept most of her relationships private, but there are still photos of her with her other ex-boyfriends.

It’s possible that they met through Miley Cyrus, since it was known that the Disney stars and their families often spent time together. It may have been a marketing strategy Disney used to promote a sense of unity among the cast members. I don’t think a teenager should have any business being involved with an older man, but as we all know, this wasn’t Demi’s last relationship with an older man — though that’s a topic for another time.

Since Demi Lovato was so busy with multiple Disney projects, she and Trace had to deal with long-distance. According to these tweets, Demi would count down the days until she could see him again. The next day, Trace tweeted about how eager he was to be reunited with her.

Four days later, Trace flew in to see Demi. Apparently, this was around the time Demi Lovato was preparing to tour again, so they wanted to spend more time together before work took her away. Trace even stayed an extra day due to a broken airplane door. Other than these cute messages they publicly exchanged, not much else is known about their relationship.

Anyway, their relationship ended due to the age gap and long distance. This sounds similar to her last relationship with Alex. Demi didn’t have much time for relationships as a teenager because she was overworked. I know that touring is one of the hardest things a musician can do—it’s incredibly time-consuming and can take a toll on an artist’s mental health. Many relationships in Hollywood are put on hold because of touring.
I’m glad that their split ended on good terms because Trace Cyrus had some genuinely kind things to say about Demi after they broke up. His statement feels real to me—unlike the typical, generic breakup statements that hide the true reasons behind the split. I personally appreciate what he said because it was honest and sincere, which helps me understand how they connected in the first place.

I have two theories as to why their relationship ended. The first theory is that Demi was working on Camp Rock 2, and it would have been a bad look to be publicly dating an older man once she started getting major publicity for such a big franchise.
My second theory is that October 2009 was around the time Joe and Demi began seeing each other. They weren’t official yet, but Demi could have ended her relationship with Trace to pursue Joe. There are also rumors that they had an open relationship, but I’ll save that information for another time.
My theory about the kind of girlfriend Demi Lovato is:

From what I can gather about Demi as a girlfriend, and the kind of guy she’s attracted to, she tends to go for rocker types who are open with their feelings. I’m not saying that’s the only type she likes, but the rocker vibe is where it really hits home for her. I remember when Demi brought back her rocker era, and her fans absolutely adored it. Being honest in her music is something she values deeply, which explains why she’s drawn to men who express themselves in a similar way.
It also doesn’t surprise me that she ended up with her husband, Jutes (Jorden Lutes). Keep in mind, this type of guy is someone she doesn’t put on blast because the relationship is meaningful to her. Demi knows that keeping secrets can do more harm than good, so she tends to say things how they are without a second thought. If her partner does something she doesn’t like, she’ll call him out. It might come across as nagging to some, but she’d rather address an issue than let it linger.
This topic was really fun because I discovered more about Demi Lovato than I thought I knew. Stay tuned to explore the possibilities surrounding Demi Lovato, Joe Jonas, and Brenda Song’s complicated relationship arrangement. I hope you all have a lovely day—stay safe. Bye, beauts! 💖
